Welcome to Perceptions with Chris Gutmann. This is my very first episode. I've been saying I would like to do a podcast for a couple of years now, so this is me finally stepping up and getting out of my comfort zone. This project has indeed been like a skinny man eating a cucumber sandwich on a bench at a bus stop. Then, all too often, a woman with a large backside plumps herself down on the bench and ejects the skinny man like a cassette from one of those old portable Sony tape recorders. That being said, here I am.
Now, I listen to a lot of podcasts. It's great for working out or washing the dishes. You know, when you've got that pile of dishes and you want to get that done, you put it on a podcast and wash them dishes.
Anyway, this is not a podcast about washing dishes. I'm an educator, a trainer and a coach, and I've recently become a dad, which does turn one's life upside down. In a good way. In the best possible way, they say. Undeniably, there is life before and after having children. No doubt.
So I want to explore topics like raising kids, education in and beyond the classroom, resilience and executive functions will definitely come up, but this medium affords a lot of freedom and I would also like to have conversations with people about science, health, innovation and culture.
So to wrap up, I would like to read a quote by the painter Albrecht Dürer. I found this quote in a collection of essays by the philosopher Karl Popper, which acted as a guide for me during my time at university and to this day. I’ll go into more detail about this in a subsequent blog, but for now I’ll just read it out. So here we go.
“But I shall let the little I have learnt go forth into the day in order that someone better than I may guess the truth, and in his work may prove and rebuke my error. At this I shall rejoice that I was yet a means whereby this truth has come to light.”
This quote had a big impact on me. I don't know whether I'm the right person to host a podcast or to have conversations with people about stuff I know very little about, but I certainly want to contribute to the free and open exchange of ideas. And if there is a chance, even the slightest possibility that I or we can improve on the information we receive in order to pass it on to other people, I think we're on track.
So this was the first episode. Thank you for listening to Perceptions with Chris Gutmann.
